Force Calibration - Made Simple

Force CalibrationForce calibration, while an essential aspect of force measurement, verification and control applications, is often misunderstood. We hope that this website will dispel some of the confusion and will assist the reader in making a more informed decision

1. Force Calibration Types

Industrial or Commercial -

Calibrations offered by independent companies and typically traceable only to internal standards and methods.

Commonly offered by load cell manufacturers that do not have accredited calibration facilities but may reference standards calibrated to national standards.
Traceable to National Standards - These are industrial or commercial calibrations where the reference load cell or weights has a calibration that is traceable to national standards but this does require specially trained or accredited staff.
Accredited * Calibrations to
ISO 17025:2005
- Calibrations carried out using accredited methods by accredited personnel in organisations/facilities that are normally annually audited for compliance
ISO-376 - Calibration to ISO standards for Proving Devices to be used for calibration of other devices and test machines
ASTM-E74 - Standard Practice of Calibration of Force-Measuring Instruments for Verifying the Force Indication of Testing Machines. USA equivalent of ISO-376
ISO-7500/1 - Calibration to ISO standard of force testing machines, requires Proving Devices calibrated to ISO-376 or equivalent
ASTM-E4 - Verification of Force Indication of Testing Machines. USA equivalent of ISO-7500/1

2. Calibrations offered by Interfaceforce UK

We are able to offer the following calibrations, either on new load cells or as recalibration of existing load cells.

Industrial or Commercial - Units from other manufacturers or local UK recalibrations may be carried out using a variety of UK based manufacturers. Please ask for details of options and standards.
Traceable to UK National Standards - When a UK calibration is offered from a UK facility we try to ensure that all reference units have traceability to National Standards
Traceable to USA National Standards -

This is our STANDARD product. All original calibration certificates for Interface Inc. load cells can be traced to NIST Standards. The calibration reference load cells and weights at Interface are returned to NIST for recalibration and many have years of history.

Note: The Interface facility and calibration personnel are accredited by A2LA and for a small charge this calibration can be upgraded to be accredited
Accredited * to
ISO/IEC 17025:2005
- UKAS accredited calibrations from Element (formerly Sheffield Testing Labs) in the UK. Visit www.ELEMENT.com for more details.
OR
A2LA from Interface Inc. USA

* ISO/IEC 17025:2005 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories
(see also ANSI/NCSL Z540-1-1994)
ISO-376 - Calibration carried out at Interface (USA), Element or NPL depending on rated capacity and Class of performance required.
ASTM-E74 - Calibration carried out at Interface (USA), Element or NPL

3. National Laboratories, Standards & Accreditation Bodies

ILAC ** - The International Laboratory Accreditation Co-operation - is an international cooperation of laboratory and inspection accreditation bodies formed more than 30 years ago to help remove technical barriers to trade. This agreement between countries recognises comparable calibration accreditations and standards e.g. UKAS and A2LA, NPL and NIST. Visit www.ILAC.org for more details.
NPL - National Physical Laboratory - United Kingdom
Visit www.NPL.co.uk for more information.
NIST - National Institute of Standards and Technology - USA,
Visit www.NIST.gov for more information.
UKAS - United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
Visit www.UKAS.com for more general details or www.UKAS.org to find accredited companies.
ISO - International Organization for Standardization
Vist www.ISO.org for details.
A2LA - The American Association for Laboratory Accreditation
Visit www.A2LA.org for comprehensive information
ASTM - ASTM International - Formerly American Society for Testing and Materials. Visit www.ASTM.org for more details.
NADCAP - NADCAP - Formerly the National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program. The NADCAP program is administered by the Performance Review Institute (PRI)and was established in 1990 for companies that specialised in the aerospace and defence industries. Visit www.PRI-network.org for more detailed information.
